M.C. Escher, the artist, traveller, mathematician and magician from Leeuwarden. He was born in 1898 at the Grote Kerkstraat in Leeuwarden. His famous work features mathematical objects and operations including impossible objects, explorations of infinity, reflection, symmetry and tessellations. Although Escher believed he had no mathematical ability, he interacted with mathematicians and conducted his own research into tessellation. Early in his career, he drew inspiration from nature, making studies of insects, landscapes and plants. He became well known in popular culture. In 2018 his artworks will return to his birthplace and will be presented at the Fries Museum.
